Family preparedness

It is important to prepare for an emergency situation; all the family can participate to this effort. It can be as simple as preparing your own emergency kit, establishing an emergency plan and to stay informed. Here are 3 simple measures to better prepare your family to face diverse emergencies :
- Know the risks – Even though the consequences can look the same from one disaster to the other, knowing the particular risks of our own community and area can help us prepare (like knowing what to do in cases of floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, severe storms, hurricanes, and technological or environmental accidents such as chemical spills and general power outage)
- Prepare an emergency plan – Each American household should have an emergency plan. This will allow you and your family to know what to do in case of a disaster. We should all practice ourselves to know what to do in different emergency cases.
- Have an emergency kit – During an emergency, maybe you will have to function without electricity or tap water. You will need essential supplies (items such as three-day supply of water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, , battery-operated or wind-up radio, first aid kit, pocket knife, prescriptions, extra set of keys and money, and copies of important documents). Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in case of an emergency.
