How to Prepare and What to do in case of Ice Storm

  • Freezing rain accumulates on branches, electric lines and buildings. If you need to go outside after an important freezing rainfall, watch out for branches and lines that could give up to the weight of ice and fall on you; stay on your guards. Big ice pieces could also fall from the roofs.
  • Never touch electric lines. Lines hanging could be charged (live) and you could get electrocuted. Also remember that ice, branches and electric lines can continue to break and fall during several hours after the end of the rain.
  • Remember that freezing rain, even in small quantities, can make roads very slippery. It is not recommended to take the road when freezing rain is forecast and several hours after the storm, to give time to maintenance teams to proceed to the spreading of sand and salt on icy roads.
  • The quick arrival of an ice storm combined with the risk of blizzard raises the possibility of extreme hypothermia. If you own a farm, quickly shelter livestock where food can be found. Most often, during an ice storm and immediately after, forage is temporarily inaccessible. The animals’ reaction is similar during ice storms and blizzards.
