How to Prepare and What to do in case of Lightning or Thunderstorm

Lightning

  • Always stay sheltered when there’s lightning.
  • To estimate the distance between yourself and lightning, count the seconds between the flash of lightning and the thunderclap. Each second represents about 300 meters. If you count less than 30 seconds, try to take refuge. If you count less than 5 seconds, take refuge immediately.
  • Wait 30 minutes after the last sign of thunder from a severe storm to go outside again.
  • Si you are stuck outside, don’t lie on the ground. Place yourself in a "leap-frog posititon", bringing your feet close together and your head down. By minimizing contact points with the ground, you are reducing electrocution risks from a ground charge.
  • Do not ride a bicycle, motorcycle, tractors, golf carts or use shovels or golfs clubs because they can conduct electricity.

Thunderstorms

  • Before a severe storm, unplug radios and televisions, and listen to weather reports on your battery radio.
  • During stormy weather, do not touch electrical household appliances, telephones, metal pipes, sinks, radiators, bathtubs and anything that conducts electricity.
  • If you are outside, take refuge in a building; if there is none nearby, go in a depressed area like a ditch, culvert or cave. Never shelter under a tree.
