What to do in Case Chemical Spill

Dangerous chemical products are sometimes accidentally poured in the course of their production, storing or transport (for example : train derailment). Here are a few tips to follow in case of chemical releases.

Listen to official instructions

Emergency responders are formed to recognize the risks and to give appropriate instructions to the public. Perhaps you will have to lock yourself up in the building you are in (see Shelter-in-place), or maybe you will have to go to an elevated area or have to evacuate the area. You must keep you emergency kit near you, and place it in a portable container like a duffel bag or suitcase with wheels.

Enclosed areas

If you suspect a chemical release in an enclosed area, like a subway or in a building, avoid breathing its fumes and leave the location as soon as possible. Immediately warn the closest police department along with fire and ambulance departments. You could have to undergo a decontamination treatment before receiving medical attention. Follow instructions given by local authorities.

Medical treatment

Exposition to a chemical substance may require quarantine and the intervention of public health officials. Since the nature of the chemical substance isn’t always recognized immediately, the treatment selection is based on symptoms. So take note of all symptoms (breathing and heart rate, perspiration, dizziness, skin tone, delirious reaction), and inform the medical staff and public health organizations.
